Monocacy National Battlefield
The Monocacy National Battlefield marks the site of the July 9, 1864 Civil War battle often called "the battle that saved Washington" — a Union delaying action that bought the capital enough time to reinforce its defenses against Jubal Early's Confederate advance. The park covers more than 1,600 acres of preserved farmland along the Monocacy River, with five historic farm complexes and roughly 10 miles of hiking trails. The visitor center is open Wednesday through Sunday, 8:30am to 5pm.
The official plan-your-visit page also lists a five-stop self-guided auto tour and six trails, giving groups a short sightseeing loop or a longer walking option. Bus groups should use the main visitor center parking area on Urbana Pike, which accommodates oversized vehicles. Confirm current tour availability and group visit logistics on the Monocacy National Battlefield plan your visit page before your trip.
